Autumn

It’s getting colder here, the chill sinking deep into my senses, stiring up longing for warmer weather. More difficult to be motivated to move, already layering up the beginning of Autumn. Shuddering at the thought of winter. A wish to be somewhere else. Where the sun is shining, the palms are waving and the waves are rushing at the shore with unrivaled passion.

“Declare this in the house of Jacob;

proclaim it in Judah:

“Hear this, O foolish and senseless people,

who have eyes, but see not,

who have ears, but hear not.

Do you not fear me? declares the Lord.

Do you not tremble before me?

I placed the sand as the boundary for the sea,

a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass;

though the waves toss, they cannot prevail;

though they roar, they cannot pass over it.

But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart;

they have turned aside and gone away.

They do not say in their hearts,

‘Let us fear the Lord our God,

who gives the rain in its season,

the autumn rain and the spring rain,

and keeps for us

the weeks appointed for the harvest.’

Your iniquities have turned these away,

and your sins have kept good from you.

– Jeremiah 5:20-25

I’ve never read this passage in Jeremiah before.

I knew that God created the earth and everything in it in 6 days, but the intricacies of creation is something that I don’t always fully appreciate. The way that the Lord has designed every part of earth is incredible. The way that the ocean was created in Jeremiah, “I placed the sand as the boundary for the sea, a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass; though the waves toss, they cannot prevail; though they roar, they cannot pass over it.” Who can say that they can do this? No one but God.

His power is unrivaled.

To be feared.

So now, although cold, I understand a little better that the seasons have all been engineered specifically for God’s purpose. He has done this FOR US.

  1. Thanks for sharing your feelings regarding the approaching season. I think each of us have a season we look forward to and one that we have a little difficulty getting excited about.

    For me, I love and look forward to autumn. By the time autumn rolls around I am more than ready to have those oppressively hot days of summer behind me. While I have many fond summer memories as a child, summer, for me as an adult, hasn’t been quite as enjoyable.

    The wonderful thing is, you and I are living in a location where we can enjoy all four seasons to their fullest. There is a definite difference – a MAJOR difference, between summer and winter. Some folks don’t get to experience such dramatic changes. Take for example those who live in tropical areas. Or those who live closer to one of the poles, than they do the equator. Yeah, there are differences, but the are not the huge swings that you and I get to enjoy. That is why I am so grateful to be a native of Colorado and not Hawaii or Alaska or Mexico or Guatemala. I’m aware that I wouldn’t hold to such a perspective if I had grown up in one of those places, but I didn’t, and I THANK GOD for that! \o/

    I like the way the Apostle Paul put it while he was in Rome and gave his Mars Hill dissertation…

    From one man he has made every nation of humanity to live all over the earth. He has given them the seasons of the year and the boundaries within which to live. He has done this so that they would look for God, somehow reach for him, and find him. In fact, he is never far from any one of us. Certainly, we live, move, and exist because of him. As some of your poets have said, ‘We are God’s children.’
    Acts 17:26-28 (GW)

    With that in mind, I hope you can find a way to enjoy every season that God has created for us, be it a time of year or a time of life.

    Grace and peace to you and yours,
    kdr

    1. Thanks so much for your comment! There’s so much of the bible I’m yet to discover! I grew up in Zimbabwe, where it’s hot to warm all year round, and it rains in summer there not winter like here. Although I’ve lived here nearly 15 years now, I don’t think I’ve quite gotten used to it, but my challenge for these colder seasons is to find blessings in them, rather than complain like previous years… as always, I really appreciate your input!

  2. I’m curious where you live…where I live, in the USA we are approaching spring. I love the spring, excited about the warmer weather and approaching summer. Autumn is cool too…I love the colors of Autumn but I’m never very excited when the weather begins to turn colder.
    God made everything for a reason…and a season. I am reminded again to rejoice always and give thanks!

  3. I happened to visit Australia on the brink of summer/ fall and found it somewhat funny to see it still being warm in the fall. For someone who is used to bitter cold winters with snow and all, those Australian fall days seem like a dream.
